Have you ever been on a tour with an expert before?
Tours I have been on in the past have been in the company of experts in the fields of archaeology, history, botany and wildlife. Archaeology and history are of the greatest interest to me.
What difference did it make having Guy on the tour with you?
It was great having someone with Guy's specialist knowledge and enthusiasm for sharing his in-depth insights. His personal style was engaging and fun. I would also like to say that Clive added much value to the role of Tour Manager with his experiences.
How did you find the experience of travelling with others as part of a group?
Generally, I prefer to travel independently and organise my own trips on site so that I can be flexible with my time and avoid pre-destined commitments - even though the logistics of getting to more remote locations can be challenging.
However, I really enjoyed the camaraderie of the Great Escape trip - especially as a number of co-travellers had family connections to the places we visited and were able to contribute their personal stories, which provided further dimensions to the entire experience.
It helped too that Guy and Clive were as sociable as they were, by bringing everyone together - at the same time as providing opportunities for people to 'do their own thing', should they wish.
What were the top 3 highlights from your experience?
- A well planned programme of visits, based in superbly-located, high-standard hotels
- Access to sites of special historical value for those interested in the lives of prisoners of war at Stalag Luft III and those who took part in the Great Escape. Also, seeing at close quarters what conditions must have been like at Colditz Castle
- Adding flesh to the bones of literature and films by actually seeing the routes taken by escapees. Also, imagining daily routines and mindsets of the people incarcerated during this time of the second world war.
What would you say to someone thinking of booking a similar trip?
Travelling with an expert in a relatively small group of similarly interested people is a fulfilling experience combining insights with camaraderie.
