CHARACTER & STYLE9/10

Bold colours, an old-school vibe and touches of whimsy create a laid-back atmosphere from the black violins lining the stairwell wall and the marmalade colours of the sitting room to the model train-set in the bar where music comes courtesy of turntable and vinyls. Young city-breakers and families will love it.

THE FACILITIES9/10

Both the bar, with a fire, and the sitting room offer armchairs, sofas and quiet corners. For warmer days, there's a small terrace. To chill-out, head to the spa; or to indulge, head to the Pantry with complimentary snacks.

ROOMS8/10

Rooms share the same style but differ in shape and layout. The 'Small' rooms are cute and cosy and we loved the turntables and selection of vinyls.

FOOD & DRINK8/10

This is Yorkshire comfort food - plenty of name-checks for local suppliers - cooked with finesse but without fancy flourishes. Breakfast is nicely offbeat with different choices including Yorkshire apple bircher, in addition to the standard fare.

Pearly Cow: elegant dining room. Local, seasonal produce. All-day menu, open daily.

Rhubarb Bar: cosy, atmospheric lounge. Serving bar snacks, signature cocktails and wines. Open daily.
