THE LOCATION8/10

A mile-and-a-half south of York, on the road to the racecourse - which lies opposite - there are no immediate attractions. The city-centre is a 10-minute bus- or taxi-ride. There's a pleasant walk, partly by the river, into the city.

By car: the hotel is 40 minutes from Leeds, 1 hour 30 minutes from Manchester and over 4 hours from London. Free on-site parking available.

By train: London Kings Cross to York takes around 2 hours. The station is a 10-minute taxi ride from the hotel. Book trains to York.

CHARACTER & STYLE9/10

The hotel suits anyone who likes the solidity and reassurance of a country house that's true to its age. Sash-windowed rooms, decorated with classic stripes and florals, are comfortably scattered with deep sofas, polished antiques, china display cabinets and large oil paintings.

THE FACILITIES9/10

It has all the trappings of a classic country-house hotel but on a more intimate scale: a small spa with swimming pool and gym, a terrace overlooking the grounds that include a walled garden and staff who pop up as you need them.

ROOMS10/10

The upstairs Courtyard rooms are cottagey and cosy; otherwise, if money to splash, go for the Lady Mary suite with its window seat overlooking the beech avenue. Every guest, in whichever room, is greeted with fresh fruit and flowers, chocolates and homemade biscuits.

Room types: Main House, Courtyard rooms; Main House, Courtyard, Garden, Cottage suites

Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, tea and coffee-making facilities, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD & DRINK9/10

This is proper, fine-dining with a choice of taster or fixed-price menus, and kicking off with canapes in the drawing room. The setting in the Oak Room with its panelled walls, silver candlesticks and crisp white linen is fairytale perfect. Puddings are works of art: try and resist Yorkshire rhubarb, crème anglaise, parkin, beurre noisette and mint.

The restaurant: 2 AA Rosettes, inventive British cuisine, tasting menu. Open daily for breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner; Sat-Sun for lunch too.
