Check into The Rubens, a five-star hotel near Buckingham Palace for two nights with a dinner, breakfasts, and afternoon tea included

The Rubens takes its illustrious London address seriously, mirroring all the grandeur you'd expect from a hotel that overlooks Buckingham Palace. From the smartly-dressed doormen who doff their hats to guests to the opulent furnishings in the lobby, this place is every inch the traditional five-star hotel.

Your two-night stay includes a three-course dinner in the English Grill - where theatrical dishes are prepared in an open kitchen by a team of expert chefs - and afternoon tea in The Palace Lounge. CHARACTER & STYLE

Part of The Red Carnation Hotel Collection, the décor is traditional and classic - think heavy drapes, silks and brocades in dark tones of burgundy, navy blue and gold. The marble-floored lobby with glistening crystal chandeliers and oil paintings of the Royal family is striking. In the restaurant, Murano chandeliers hang above brown leather banquettes and still lifes adorn the walls. You'll also find artworks depicting famous 18th century battles and silks portraying traditional British military ceremonies in the bar.

THE FACILITIES

Expect traditional British hospitality at The Rubens - from red-uniformed doormen greeting guests at the entrance, to reception staff seeking to offer visitors an authentic British experience. Nothing is too much - staff are always eager to help with a smile on their faces. Facilities are sadly very limited. There's no on-site gym, but guests can work out at City Athletic in Victoria.

Food & Drink

Afternoon tea in the Palace Lounge is often popular, but as the sun sets, the action moves to the New York Bar. The Curry Room serves Indian dishes in a cosy basement setting and the English Grill is the hotel's fine dining restaurant. We liked the Orkney king scallops, served with English chorizo and an applewood hollandaise.

The English Grill: fine dining, 2 AA-Rosette restaurant. Open daily for breakfast and dinner.

The Curry Room: Indian cuisine, open Thu-Mon for dinner. 3-course menu from £75.
