THE LOCATION8/10

On the south-eastern side of the city, towards the end of Walmgate, it's within the city walls (five minutes) but a good 20-minute walk from the Minster and most popular attractions. Shops along Walmgate and its extension, Fossgate, are small independents, with a mix of delis, vintage, eateries.

By car: the hotel is 45 minutes from Leeds, 1 hour 30 minutes from Manchester and over 4 hours from London. Paid parking available nearby.

By train: London Kings Cross to York takes around 2 hours, after which, the hotel is 10 minutes by taxi. Book trains to York.

CHARACTER & STYLE8/10

The interiors are lively, think a mix of parquet and tiled floors, oak-panelled and white-brick walls, leather chairs and velvet sofas and exposed light-bulbs. Youthful-minded folk who like a jolly atmosphere will enjoy staying here.

This is not a hotel that goes big on extras. Facilities are minimal - a few sofas in reception, a restaurant and bar, a tiny gym, plus discounted off-site parking.
