Step from the street into a small bar and snug that oozes a Dickensian atmosphere. Anyone who likes a good old-fashioned inn with a darkly romantic character will love staying here.

THE FACILITIES7/10

As it's primarily an inn, there are few extras. Guests are offered a free guided tour of the city, plus discounted car parking. The pub also runs regular live gigs, if you're interested.

FOOD & DRINK8/10

This is modern British pub food and deserving its one-AA-rosette accolade. The dining-room is wonderfully atmospheric and if you don't mind eating early, the set menus (shortened forms of the à la carte) are excellent value.

The restaurant: AA Rosette, traditional British dishes and pub classics. Open Mon-Sat for lunch and dinner, Sun for lunch.
