Follow in the footsteps of the Allied Forces, who struggled to gain control of Sicily and witness historical sights including the invasion beaches on the island's south coast, the Plain of Catania and hill-top towns of Assoro, Centuripe and Troina. Sicily is rich in history and you'll have the opportunity to visit Ragusa, with its baroque architecture, as well as the Medieval streets of Taormina, and the Roman Amphitheatre and Greek ruins at Siracusa. You'll visit the prisoner-of-war camp, made famous by the 1963 film The Great Escape and Guy will tell its true story, while showing you around the camp, as well as the routes taken by the escapees. Continue along those routes as you cross the border into Germany, visiting Chemnitz, before a day at Colditz Castle - which was converted into a high security prison during the war. There will also be time to visit the German city of Dresden, home to the Museum of Military History and the Frauenkirche - a Lutheran church, reconstructed in 1994 after the firebombing of Dresden towards the end of the war.
